SERPs
Search Engine Results Page
The Serps competition began in the Usenet newsgoup alt.internet.search-engines after a bit of friendly banter amongst the regulars. It soon caught on and spawned a number of similar competitions in the following months.
Idea of the serps search engine optimisation competition
The basic idea of the serps competition is to gain the highest Google placement, in a set time, for a given keyword.
After the idea was first suggested, the first decision was, what keyword? A few ideas were initially suggested until the keyword Serps was finaly decided upon.
The competition began on January 17th and a date of January 31st was set as the last day of entry to the serps competition.
All competitors had to register there entry on Justins official serps registration page, where Justin closely monitored progress ;o)
It was decided there would be NO RULES to the serps competition and anybody could enter.
Why Serps?
It was decided that Serps was the perfect keyword, SERPs being an acronym for Search Engine Results Page. With only approximately 80,000 pages in the serps for serps, It was not a competitve target which meant keeping track of all entries would be easier. Unfortunately, or some may say fortunately, Serps is also an acronym for State Earnings Related Pension Scheme. This made the keyword slightly more competitive, especially as there were a number of BBC pages providing information about serps.
Prize for the SERPs competition
There is no official prize for the serps search engine optimisation competition, but a regular of alt.internet.search-engines - SEO Dave - has declared that any page that is higher than his after 3 months, will receive a link, to the site of there choice, from Dave's PR6+ serps site. The link will stay up for 12 months and contain the anchor text of your choice.

SERPS Please note: I am taking a short break at this delightful cheap hotel in London for a few days, and will not be able to reply to any emails. As soon as I get back I will get in touch. Many thanks to Jon for telling me about the new Road Angel speed camera detectors, hopefully this will save me a few pounds in speeding fines and head lice treatment this time :o(
